Life Lessons from the Backyard

Life lessons from backyard squirrels.

In my backyard, I have power lines running across and above the yard.

Every day, squirrels run across the power lines to get from trees on one side of our yard to the other.

And my dogs love it!

They get so excited to chase squirrels as they run across the power lines.

The other day I was watching the squirrel- dog events in the backyard and a squirrel was stopped at the power pole in fear of the dogs below.

This squirrel waited and waited and waited.

Every now and then the squirrel would inch out a little bit and then scurry back to the power pole when my dogs barked.

Eventually a second squirrel came up behind him creating a squirrel traffic jam on the powerline highway in my backyard.

The first squirrel finally came back to the pole, and allowed the second squirrel to run straight across the line to the other side where all the good food was in another big tree.

While this first squirrel was still stuck in fear of the dogs below.

Finally, after watching this poor squirrel, wait around for 15 minutes in fear, I took my dogs inside and peeked out the window and saw him cautiously scoot across the line one foot at a time. Now feeling safer that the dogs weren't 30 feet below him.

I find this squirrel highway hilarious. always entertaining.

I couldn't help but think how this squirrel was teaching a good life lesson, how often we get stuck in fear. Think of the worst “what if…”  Or in this squirrels case “What if I miss a step and fall down to those crazy dogs?”

How often do we get stuck in fear w/o being able to move forward and get to where we want to go.
